直島で設計した最初の建物が直島小学校であった。背後の山を意識し、その形態を建築に採用した。従来の独立した体育館の使用率は16％と大変低く、そのため廊下や中庭を取り囲んだ設計とした。

The first building I designed in Naoshima was an elementary school. It's the same shape as the mountain behind. You could say we replaced the slope with a building of the same shape. The usual separate gymnasium is only used 16% of school time. So we made the gym part of the corridors and part of the courtyard. Courtyard and gym are half surrounded by classrooms.
